Manipulate a Paper World

In Barkane: the Folds of Calamity, navigate a series of paper-folding puzzles, where you must manipulate the level itself to progress. You can fold sections of the level along joints, enabling you to reshape the world, navigate around obstacles, and solve clever challenges. Move Marmalade around the level in order to collect the crystal shards, activate the goal, and progress to the following level. 

Explore Unique Interactions

Discover 18 levels in 3 unique areas: Cherry Blossom Forest, Snowy Snow Peaks, and the Glowstick Caves. Each area introduces unique mechanics, such as a movable snowball and crackable glowsticks. These objects present new challenges, progressively increasing the difficulty of puzzles – and the satisfaction of solving them.  Along the way, you'll unlock special cosmetic items for Marmalade to wear.

Collect all 54 stars by minimizing your fold count. 
Revisit old levels to solve them in fewer folds, compete against your friends, and conquer this paper world to become the one and only Barkane Mage!

Development History

Barkane was intially developed during Fall 2022 as part of VGDev. The game was first publicly released after Wreckcon 2023.  After a brief pause, development resumed 
 in fall 2023. Barakane was an honorable mention for best student game at IGF 2024 and won best student game at DreamHack Atlanta 2023. Version 1.0 was showcased at Wreckcon 2024 and released shortly thereafter. 

While this version of Barkane is complete, we anticipate revisting this concept and these characters in the future. Follow along for updates!

Disclaimer

By my own estimates, this game is 80% ish bug free. You can definatley break it, especially using the undo/redo system. If you ever get stuck, you can always restart the level from the pause menu. I am aware of all of the major bugs, but many would require a full system re-write (the 4th one) in order to fix. If they annoy you that much, come back in a few years when I make a remake/sequel/whatever. 
With that said, I hope you enjoy Barkane :)
